Design Notes: This Kelvin test socket was developed to accommodate three leads with different lengths and contact angles—an application requiring precise mechanical alignment and reliable electrical performance. Tooltronics engineered a Kelvin contact solution that securely anchors each lead while eliminating the need for adhesives, allowing for easier maintenance and servicing.

To support the customer’s shrink-freeze insertion process, the socket body was manufactured from glass-filled Teflon, providing excellent strength, dimensional stability, and grip during installation.

The final design delivered a robust solution that met all mechanical and electrical requirements, with the customer particularly recognizing the precision engineering and thoughtful material selection behind the design.

Straight Pin Relay

Design Notes: The Tooltronics Straight Pin Guided Entry Relay Test Socket is designed for reliable performance and easy relay installation. Its three-piece construction features a precision-machined top plate that guides the relay into proper alignment before contacting the test pins.

This guided entry design reduces the risk of bent pins, misalignment, and relay damage during insertion, while improving operator efficiency and overall test consistency.

Ideal for production testing, validation, and laboratory environments, this socket helps protect both the relay and the test hardware while extending overall socket life.

2-Piece Relay Test Socket

Dual Compatibility Design

Design Notes: The Tooltronics Hook Pin / Straight Pin 2-Piece Relay Test Socket is designed for flexibility, durability, and ease of maintenance in demanding test environments. Our non-guided entry, two-piece design accommodates both hook and straight pin relay leads—allowing a single socket to be used for both relay types with equivalent or near-equivalent device lead lengths.

Featuring our adhesive-free anchoring design, these sockets simplify maintenance by enabling quick contact replacement without the mess or downtime associated with adhesives. This approach ensures long-lasting, trouble-free performance while reducing service time and costs.

Understanding Kelvin Contacts

Kelvin contacts utilize separate current and sensing contact points to help eliminate the effects of contact resistance during electrical testing. This allows for more accurate and repeatable low-resistance measurements, making Kelvin contacts ideal for demanding relay testing applications.

FAQ

What types of relays are these sockets compatible with?

Tooltronics relay test sockets are available for both hook pin and straight pin relay configurations. In some applications, both styles may utilize the same non-guided entry 2-piece socket design when lead lengths are similar.

Why use Kelvin contacts in relay testing?

Kelvin contacts provide more accurate low-resistance measurements by separating the current and sensing paths, reducing the influence of contact resistance during testing.

Are custom relay test sockets available?

Yes. Tooltronics, Inc. specializes in custom-engineered relay test socket solutions designed around specific relay packages, lead configurations, spacing requirements, and testing applications.
